Erik's First Cast

Erik broke 2 fingers yesterday on his left hand.  I know this sounds bad, but I'm not exactly sure how it happened.  I turned my back for a moment and the next thing I knew he was on the ground and a small wicker side table was on top of him.  My suspicion was that he was trying to climb on the table and it tipped over and pinched his fingers underneath.  He was crying like it hurt but at the age of 2 1/2 one is not sure whether the cry is real, cause it hurts, or manufactured for attention.  I brushed it aside initially cause it looked like such a minor event and hurried him off to his summer preschool.  By the time we got to school and I showed it to the teacher, two of his fingers were blown up and black and blue.  No mother of the year award for me.

We decided to go to the doctor who also thought it was probably just a minor sprain but ordered X-rays out of an abundance of caution.  Erik was not a big fan of the X-ray experience and screamed and carried on so much that the tech could only get one picture.  From that one picture she could tell there was a break.

So today went went to the sports medicine orthopedic doctor who ordered more X-rays and sure enough Erik had broken not one but two fingers!  Erik is not a big fan of the doctor, nor
X-rays.  He is even less of a fan of getting a cast on.  The doctor said with little kids a splint is not effective so they recommend a cast.  Needless to say, Erik did slip out of the first 2 casts that they put up just part way up his arm.  So the third time, with the help of myself and 4 technicians we were able to put a cast on him that went down past his fingers and up past his elbow.  We were exhausted after the experience.

He has to wear the cast for 3 weeks!  The doctor said he would adjust quickly and to not worry about anything but getting it wet.  He is his fathers' son.  This afternoon he figured out how to ride his bike with one hand!
